By late May the forecast in Goodyear starts showing triple digits, and it usually stays that way well into September. Air conditioning does the heavy lifting, but a few small habits make the house more comfortable and safer. This is the list we run through every May.
Bedrooms and living spaces
- Switch to breathable bedding. Cotton sheets with an open weave sleep cooler than microfiber, especially on nights when it is still 90 degrees at 10 pm.
- Close blinds on the west side by early afternoon. The late sun is the strongest heat gain most Valley homes get.
- Run ceiling fans counter-clockwise. The downdraft makes a room feel several degrees cooler, so the thermostat can sit a little higher.
Air, dust and filters
- Change the AC filter. Dust storms and summer use clog filters fast. Check it monthly through the season.
- Swap your vacuum filters. Fine desert dust and pet hair cut suction more than you'd expect.
- Wipe vents and fan blades. A damp cloth keeps dust from blowing back around the room.
Safety in the hot months
- Watch your wiring. When the AC, pool pump and dryer all run at once, circuits work hard. An electrical fire sensor can warn you about arcing early.
- Test smoke and CO alarms. Press the test button on the first of each month.
- Keep a fire blanket by the stove. Summer is grilling season, indoors and out.
- Never leave people or pets in a parked car. Not even for a minute. Cars heat up dangerously fast here.
Quick tip: keep a printed copy of your AC service company's number on the fridge. If the unit fails in July, you won't want to search for it.
