Every February the West Valley fills up with baseball fans, and Goodyear Ballpark is just a short drive from our door. Spring training days are some of the best of the year here: blue sky, mild air and a full afternoon outside. They are also sunnier than most visitors expect. Here is what we pack.
Before you leave the house
- Check tire pressure in the morning. Desert pavement warms up fast, and a reading taken in the afternoon looks higher than it really is. A cordless inflator gets you to the right PSI in a couple of minutes.
- Look over the roadside kit. Jumper cables, gloves and a reflective vest live in our trunk all year. Heat is hard on car batteries, even in spring.
- Fill water bottles. Check the ballpark's current bag and bottle rules before you go, and drink plenty on the drive.
At the ballpark
- Sunglasses with real UV protection. Afternoon games put the sun right in your eyes on the first-base side. Look for UV400 lenses.
- Comfortable shoes. Between the parking lot, the concourse and the lawn seats, you will walk more than you think.
- Sunscreen, a hat and a light layer. It can be warm at 1 pm and cool by the last inning once the sun drops behind the White Tanks.
Quick tip: never leave sunglasses, phones or aerosol cans on the dashboard. Even in March, a closed car in Goodyear gets hot enough to damage them.
On the drive home
Traffic on the Loop 303 and the I-10 can stack up after a game, so give yourself time. Once you are home, recharge the inflator so it is ready for the next outing.
